AfD extends lead as SPD falls in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

New Geostrategy polling in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern shows the AfD extending its lead ahead of the state election on the 20th of September, with the AfD on 38%, compared to 26% for the SPD.

This means the AfD has reached its highest level in Geostrategy polling, equalling numbers last seen in 2025, while the SPD has fallen to its joint-lowest level in what remains a relatively strong state for the struggling centre-left party. The 12-point gap between the two parties represents a significant advantage for the AfD as the campaign enters its final weeks.

The Left stands in third place on 14%, showing momentum for the party mostly at the expense of the SPD. The CDU follows on 9%, while the Greens are on 4%, below the threshold for representation. The BSW and FDP record 4% and 3% respectively, with minor parties accounting for just 2%.

The latest figures underline the shifting political landscape in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where the AfD has established a substantial lead in recent polling as support for the SPD has weakened. The Left has also strengthened its position, moving into a clear third place.

With the election now less than three weeks away, the principal contest is increasingly centred on the scale of the AfD’s lead and the battle for second place between the SPD and the Left.
