Nov 25 2024
In a striking development that underscores the evolving dynamics of French politics, Marine Le Pen has emerged from our latest poll as the only major figure with a net positive approval rating. Her position, with 40 percent of respondents approving of her and 39 percent disapproving, reflects a slight but real shift in public mood.
What is most notable in these approval rating figures is the demographic breakdown: Le Pen’s strongest support comes from those aged 25–34 (44 percent) and 35–44 (47 percent). These groups represent a younger-to-middle-aged electorate that might be feeling jaded with traditional politics. Rising living costs, worries about national identity, and a sense of discontentment with established parties could be feeding into support for her brand of populist conservatism. Where older generations may still hold reservations formed by her family name and the party’s history, these younger voters seem more open to her campaign promises on immigration, social welfare and economic protectionism.
This is noteworthy in the context of Le Pen’s political trajectory. Her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, had kept her politically in the shadows until he forced her takeover. His extremism defined the party’s image for decades. As she has sought to soften the party’s tone and broaden its appeal since taking over the National Front in 2011 — which changed its name to National Rally — her father’s anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim speech had stuck. Her program now is less about far-right fringe provocation and more about seizing sovereignty, law and order, and protecting working-class interests. This has proven increasingly potent since the 2017 presidential elections when she reached the final round against Emmanuel Macron. She didn’t win that contest, but her surge in the polls and coalescing support suggested she might have the ability to stick around.
The prospects of other leading political figures are decidedly weaker by comparison. The popularity of the sitting Prime Minister has fallen to 15%, as the public is clearly frustrated with government policies. The plight of President Emmanuel Macron, whose approval ratings stand at just 17%, is even more telling. A solid 60 percent of respondents say they disapprove of him — which makes Macron the most disliked political figure in this poll. This represents a stark reversal from a president who once personified hope and renewal when first elected. A string of unpopular reforms, persistent social unrest and his perceived detachment from grass-roots problems have gradually undermined Macron’s broad-based appeal.
Le Pen’s slim but significant lead in approval highlights a decisive moment in French politics. Among a landscape of economic uncertainty and arguments raging over everything from immigration to globalisation, voters appear more willing than ever to listen to politicians who reside on the edges of the traditional establishments.
Whether Le Pen’s positive rating remains stable — or even rises further — is an open question in the unruly landscape of French politics. But for now, she remains the lone figure with a net positive rating, establishing herself as a serious contender and likely favourite to be the new President of France. Her increasing appeal, especially among younger adults, indicates a greater appetite for her political message. If nothing more, it signals that a once-marginalised figure may help reshape French politics in the years ahead.
