National Mood: Pessimism Dominates Public Outlook on the UK’s Direction

Learn how pessimism dominates public outlook in the UK, as over 40% express concerns about future wellbeing and direction.

Mar 06 2025

Public sentiment about the UK’s future remains overwhelmingly negative, with 43% of

respondents in our latest poll expressing pessimism about the country’s direction, compared to

just 31% who are optimistic. This highlights a prevailing sense of uncertainty and discontent

across key demographics. Labour voters are the most optimistic (55%), whereas Reform UK

supporters are the most pessimistic (80%).

Wellbeing and Happiness: A Declining Trend

When it comes to personal wellbeing, the outlook remains bleak. Over the past three months,

40% of respondents say their wellbeing has worsened, compared to just 23% who report an

improvement. Those aged 45-54 are struggling the most, with 52% citing negative wellbeing

changes. In fact, the only age group which has experienced an improvement are those aged 25-

34 (40%).

Looking ahead, expectations remain subdued. Only 25% expect their wellbeing to improve in

the next three months, while 31% fear further decline. This continued pessimism suggests that

many do not believe their personal circumstances will get better in the short term, reinforcing the

wider national mood of uncertainty.

Financial Struggles Driving Discontent

Economic hardship appears to be a major contributor to declining wellbeing. Nearly half (45%)

of respondents say their financial situation has worsened in the last three months, with only 22%

seeing an improvement. The strain is consistent across all age groups with those aged 45+

most affected.

Looking to the future, the outlook is similarly pessimistic. 42% expect their financial situation to

worsen in the next three months, while only 23% anticipate improvement. This indicates that

financial strain is not just a short-term issue but a growing concern for many households.

A Nation Struggling with Uncertainty

The data paints a picture of a nation grappling with declining wellbeing, financial instability and a

lack of confidence in the future. Optimism remains in short supply, with over 40% expecting both

their financial situation and personal wellbeing to deteriorate further, the government faces

mounting pressure to restore confidence and stability in the months ahead.
